Mac OS X Applications & Tools
Listed here, in no particular order, are some small applications and tools that we've found to be useful, either on our personal workstations and laptops, on the machines in the various labs and departments or on our servers. If you have any suggestions for tools that should be available here let us know. If you're looking for AppleScripts then check in the Scripts section of the site.
- LogOutAE
- A screensaver that will automatically log users out after a timer countdown. Used in the OIT Labs to automatically log idling users out. Both PPC and Intel versions are included in the download. Homepage but NOTE that this site is currently unreliable. There are efforts to create our own version of the functionality of this program.
- OFPW Tool
- Allows you to lock down Open Firmware with a password. All boot key combinations are disabled except for the option key and when booting with it held down the user is prompted for the password. Great way to provide a greater level of physical security to prevent users from booting systems into single-user mode, for instance. Homepage
- DiskErase
- Some versions of Mac OS X wouldn't allow non-admin users to format disks. CMU created this utility in response to the problem. Homepage
- Duke OpenAFS for Tiger
Duke OpenAFS for Leopard
- This installation allows you to locally mount AFS volumes on your computer and access the Duke AFS cell. This installer is based on version 1.4.5 of OpenAFS but it also installs the files needed to access Duke content available in AFS.
- AFSTokens app
- This utility puts a GUI interface on some common AFS tasks such as getting and destroying kerberos tokens. It also features some "pts" functionality (the feature of AFS that allows you to create your own groups for setting access controls).
